Google’s next generation of tensor processing units, powerful data processors created specifically for the training and development of machine learning technologies, will soon be made available to organizations and individuals across the world via Google Cloud. How powerful is a tensor processing unit, you ask? Each TPU is capable of no less than 180 teraflops of processing power, with each TPU pod containing a total of 64 TPUs. Together, they can deliver as much as 11.5 petaflops of processing power. With performance such as this, Google’s new Cloud TPU is easily a dozen times more powerful than some of the best chips available in the market, designed specifically for the kind of machine learning tasks that require this amount of power.

Project Brainwave is working on the development of a new series of field-programmable gate array chipsets to power real-time artificial intelligence in its many data centres, a platform which has been predicted to be even more powerful and versatile than Google’s artificial intelligence services.
